Interview with JJ Worrall (@johnjoeworrall), freelance journalist for The Irish Times and others

Q.  Tell us a bit about yourself. 

I’m a freelance writer for a number of newspapers and magazines. I’m based in Dublin and currently my right foot is four times the size of my left after I twisted it playing five-a-side football. That’s me in a nutshell.

Q. Tell us a little bit about the titles you write for and their interest in data security. 

I write for The Irish Times, Sunday Business Post and ComputerScope in the main, alongside a number of other print and online titles. Each will regularly include features that have a security focus of some kind. The Business Post’s “Computers in Business” supplement has a monthly “security watch” feature for instance, while the Times will cover cybersecurity, data privacy and related subjects almost every week. ComputerScope is aimed at IT professionals and there’s always news or features on security trends as well as new products or services related to the space.

Q. What’s hot in IT security this year?

SC Awards Europe Deadline Extended to Dec 20

Here’s a little early Christmas gift for the IT security world: Late entries to the SC Awards Europe 2013 will be accepted until December 20th. The deadline extension means you have a little extra time amid the hubbub of the winter holidays to get your entries together. Click here for more information on entering the awards. Please note that all late entries need to be accompanied by a modest late fee.

One of the most prestigious IT security awards in Europe, the SC Awards “honour the professionals working to secure enterprises of all sizes and the vendors that deliver innovative security technologies.” The awards are open to vendors, resellers, MSPs, consultants and integrators. There are categories for solutions, individuals, teams, and projects. 2012 winners included solutions from Accelion, M86, Symantec, Trend Micro and many others, plus individuals from Barclaycard and Realex Payments.

Infosecurity Europe Call for Papers Deadline Approaching

Confirmed exhibitors at Infosecurity Europe 2013 have just two days left to prepare their speaker submissions. The official call for papers is available here. Don’t worry if you’re having trouble narrowing down your speaking topics to just one: Each company may submit a maximum of three speaker submissions. Just remember to keep your pitches vendor-neutral, because sales and product pitches will not be accepted. A guidance document with advice on preparing your submissions is available here. The deadline is this Wednesday, 12th December.
